Composite Doors vs uPVC Doors: Which Should You Choose?

One of the most common questions our sales team hears, in our Bristol and Exeter showrooms and now our Cardiff office, is whether to choose a composite door or a uPVC door. The internet is full of opinions, but much of it is written by people who sell one type and not the other. We fit both, every week, and we really do not mind which one you choose. So here is a straight comparison.

Composite Doors: The Elegance Collection

Our composite doors come from the Elegance Collection. They have a solid timber core (typically 48mm thick) with a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) skin on both sides. This construction makes them incredibly strong, highly secure, and excellent thermal insulators. A composite door feels substantial when you close it. There is a satisfying weight and solidity that immediately communicates quality to anyone entering your home.

The range of styles is extensive. From traditional four-panel designs suited to Victorian and Edwardian properties, through to contemporary designs with large glazed panels and stainless steel furniture, there is a composite door for virtually any property type. Colours run the full spectrum, and because the colour is moulded into the GRP skin rather than painted on, it will not fade, peel, or require repainting. Woodgrain finishes are particularly popular, giving the appearance of real timber with none of the maintenance.

Security is a key strength. Most Elegance Collection doors are Secured by Design accredited, meaning they have been tested and approved by the police initiative for crime prevention. Multi-point locking is standard, and smart lock compatibility (such as Yale Conexis) is available for keyless entry. Typical installed cost: £1,200-2,500 depending on size, style, glass, and furniture.

uPVC Doors: The County Collection

Our uPVC panel doors come from the County Collection. These are traditional panel door designs manufactured in uPVC, the same proven material as our window frames. They are available in our full 30 colourways from Deceuninck, are multi-point locking as standard, and carry the same 15-year guarantee as every product we install.

Where uPVC doors really shine is value for money. A well-specified County Collection door delivers excellent security, good thermal performance, and a clean appearance at a price point that is typically 40-50% less than an equivalent composite. For back doors, side doors, and utility entrances, where the door is functional rather than a statement piece, a uPVC door is often the sensible choice. Typical installed cost: £600-1,200.

The Key Differences

Weight and feel: a composite door is noticeably heavier and more solid. Some people love this; others find it makes no practical difference. Thermal performance: composite doors typically achieve slightly better U-values (around 1.0 vs 1.2-1.4 for uPVC), though both are vastly superior to an old timber or aluminium door. Sound insulation: composite wins due to the solid core. Security: both offer multi-point locking; composite has the edge in brute-force resistance due to the solid core. Appearance: composite offers more premium design options and more realistic woodgrain finishes; uPVC is clean and functional but less visually diverse. Longevity: both carry our 15-year guarantee; in practice, both will last 25-30+ years with no maintenance.

Our Recommendation

For your front door, the entrance that creates the first impression of your home, we almost always recommend composite. The Elegance Collection looks and feels premium, offers the best security, and has the widest choice of styles and finishes. It is the door your visitors will compliment.

For back doors, side entrances, utility doors, and anywhere the door is primarily functional rather than decorative, the County Collection uPVC is excellent value. You get the same quality installation, the same guarantee, and the same 30 colourways at a significantly lower price.

Many of our customers choose a composite front door and uPVC for everything else, and that is exactly what we would do in our own homes.
